chapter 1
Sunlight poured into the apprentices den where Cedarpaw , Brightpaw , Oakpaw , Stonepaw, and Blackpaw were just rising their heads. Oakpaw was always the first to get up. He sat up, gave his chest a few licks, and trotted off to get some fresh kill. ”I’ll get you hibernating hedgehogs some fresh kill!” He yowled behind him. He looked back to see if they were following him, and his two sisters, Cedarpaw and Brightpaw, poked their heads out of the den, and then went back inside. He went to the pile, picked a plump vole, two squirrels, a fat looking mouse, and a shrew. As he carried the fresh kill back to the den, he took a glance at his older brother, Redfoot, that was named a warrior last night, and was sitting his vigil. But it wouldn’t make sense to make fun of Redfoot, because he had stopped his training for almost a moon. Last leaf-bare he was chasing a pheasnt onto the thunderpath, and gotten hit by a monster. Redfoot’s sisters Sandtail and Russetleg had become warriors before him. Sandtail, Russetleg, and Redfoot were their mother, Hollypelt’s, first litter. He cleared his mind and went back to the den. When he went inside so much activity was going on in the den. Stonepaw and Cedarpaw were chasing each other, and Blackpaw was trying to show Brightpaw how to stalk a bird, the wrong way. ”Your doing it the wrong way mousebrain! Oh, Hi Oakpaw!” She meowed in a half friendly half playful tone. “Hi Brightpaw.” He meowed back. Then Cedarpaw bounded up with Stonepaw. ”I can’t wait until we’re warriors!” She meowed exitedly. “You’ll have to wait a while for that.” They all turned around and looked at Rockpool, Cedarpaw’s mentor. “Last night was your first time as an apprentice.” He said. ” ”Well, here comes Thorntail.” He said looking back at Stonepaw’s mentor. ”Do I have to go to training?” Stonepaw complained. ”Yes.” Thorntail replied. Blackpaw made a sigh of relief. ”At least Sandtail isn’t here yet.” Just then Sandtail walked in. ”Time for training!” she meowed. Blackpaw let out a snort. Then Rockpool sat down. ”Have any of you seen Daisyheart?” He asked. Where was his mentor? So the apprentices started leaving with their mentors except Brightpaw. “I Guess Moonshine will be expecting me.” She meowed and padded away. She almost got knocked over by Daisyheart rushing in. “Sorry! Goldenstar sent me to look for Applekit. She wandered off again.” She meowed. “Smokefoot should watch them more often.” “Did you find her?” He asked. “Yes, she almost wandered onto the Thunderpath.” “Is she hurt?” “No.” “Good.” He hated the thought that one of Smokefoot’s kits had almost gotten killed. He knew Smokefoot was his mother, Hollypelt’s, sister. ”Can we hunt?” he asked. ”Sure.” she replied. ”Rockpool and Cedarpaw are going hunting too. We can go with them if you want.” ”Sure, that would be great.” he meowed.
Soon after Daisyheart and Oakpaw set out they found Rockpool and Cedarpaw almost immediately. Amazingly, they had already caught a thrush, two rabbits, and a shrew. “I caught the shrew and one of the rabbits.” Cedarpaw murmured. Her eyes were gleaming with pride. Then she suddenly jumped up and yowled “Teach me how to catch birds!” at Rockpool. ”I will. But not today.” He meowed. “How about we go patrol the border for now?” Daisyheart suggested. ”Good idea.” replied Rockpool .When they got to the Shadow clan border they started smelling a horrible smelling scent. Oakpaw wrinkled his nose in disgust. But Cedarpaw just wandered across the scent markers not knowing what they are. ”Yuck.” she meowed. In the distance they heard a Shadowclan patrol approaching. ”Cedarpaw get back!” Rockpool yowled. Stunned, Cedarpaw backed up. “Hide!” hissed Daisyheart. They all ran for cover. Rockpool ran and hid under a bush, Daisyheart climbed into the branches of a pine, and the apprentices dashed behind an Oak a little farther into Thunderclan territory. ”Good going” Oakpaw whispered to Cedarpaw, along with an angry glare. ”It’s not my fault” she meowed. ”Yes it is!” He hissed angrily. They both looked over, and saw the Shadow clan patrol. The patrol was made up of Hawkpelt, Darktail, Yellowflower and Lionfur. Then, unexpectedly, the patrol walked right into Thunder clan territory. “ And what exactly do you think your doing?” Hissed an angry Daisyheart’s voise as she jumped down from the pine. “Yes, why are you here?” growled Rockpool as he came out from under the bush. ”Yeah, what do you think your doing?” Snarled Cedarpaw. Oakpaw had never seen her this angry and fierce. He knew all he could do was go out of hiding, like the rest of them had done. He stalked out his brown pelt gleaming in the sunlight. “Get out of Thunder clan territory!” He yowled. “What are you talking about? This is Shadowclan territory.” Said Hawkpelt. “Just because your deputy doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want!” Meowed Cedarpaw. ”My father is deputy too!” she yowled, sudden anger blazing in her eyes. ”Calm down little one. This is not for you to fight.” He said. “Fight? Who said we were fighting?” Asked a confused Daisyheart. “All we’re trying to do is get territory settled.” “Isn’t it obvious? We have to fight. It’s the only way.” He said grimly. “I’m not fighting.” She replied. “Bring Cinderstar to fourtrees at dawn. We will bring Goldenstar.” She said, and stalked away. She indicated with her tail for the others to follow.
When the patrol had gotten back, Stonepaw had looked very worried. Cedarpaw had just left to talk and share tounges with him. Oakpaw and the rest of the patrol was in Goldenstar’s den, reporting the Shadowclan invation. ”So we told them we would bring you to Fourtrees at dawn.” Daisyheart finished. “Very well. When we go, I want to take a small patrol .I will bring the patrol that saw it, and Russetleg.” Meowed Goldenstar.
The patrol stood at fourtrees waiting for Shadowclan, the sun just starting to rise. Finally they saw a few lean shapes climbing the slope. Oakpaw immediately recognized Cinderstar’s gray pelt, along with Hawkpelt, Darktail, Jayheart, Lionfur, and Yellowflower, along with her apprentice, Ravenpaw. “So Cinderstar,Why was one of your patrols on Thunderclan territory?” Goldenstar began. “Hawkpelt told them it was Shadowclan territory.” Replied Cinderstar. “Where did this happen?” She asked Rockpool. “Over on that stretch of land.” He said flicking his tail towards the spot. “We were patrolling the border when we saw it. They just walked right across into our territory. “ “So what’s your explanation for this, Cinderstar?” asked Goldenstar angrily. “I told you. Hawkpelt told them it was Shadowclan territory.” “Yes, he might have, but even if he really did, he was lying.” She meowed. “I thought we settled the boundaries long before our own mothers were born!” He said furiously lashing his tail from side to side, as if he was sensing that he was losing the argument. “They were! And it when they were settled, that was Thunderclan territory!” She yowled, flicking her tail toward the area. “This is settled.” She growled, and flicked her tail to let the others know to follow. “This isn’t over yet!” He yowled after them.
“What happened? What happened?” Stonepaw asked Cedarpaw exitedly. The patrol had just gotten back from Fourtrees. Oakpaw, Cedarpaw, and Stonepaw were in the apprentices’ den talking, also trying to get away from the hot Greenleaf sun that burned outside. Oakpaw was eating a mouse, Stonepaw and Cedarpaw were sharing a vole, while sharing tongues. “It was awesome! It was really bright, and guess what? We won!” meowed Cedarpaw exitedly. “Be quiet! The whole clan is going to think we’re having a party!” Oakpaw hissed “Sorry.” Cedarpaw murmured. Just then Thorntail walked in. “Hey Stonepaw, up for some hunting?” He meowed. “Sure!” Stonepaw meowed excitedly. Then they left and Cedarpaw and Oakpaw were the only ones left in the den. “Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather here for a Highrock meeting!” The call rang out from outside. “Come on.” He said to Cedarpaw.
Now almost all the cats were in the circle now. He could just see Ashtail coming out steadily with Spiderheart. Her kits should be coming soon, he thought. Suprisingly, he saw Stonepaw go onto Highrock. “I, Goldenstar leader of Thunderclan, call down on my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. He has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend him to you as a warrior in turn. Stonepaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend the clan, even at the cost of your life?” Oakpaw heard a surprised gasp from Cedarpaw. ”I do” He murmured proudly. Then by the powers of Starclan, I give you your warrior name. Stonepaw, from this moment on you will be known as Stonepelt. Starclan honors your courage and loyalty, and we welcome you as a full Warrior of Thunderclan. She touched her muzzle to his head, and he bowed respectfully. “Stonepelt! Stonepelt!” There were exited cheers and shouts. He saw Stonepelt walk down from Highrock, and Cedarpaw run up to congratulate him.

chapter 2
“But you can’t sleep with me anymore!” Cedarpaw complained. “I’m sorry. I’ll miss it too. When you’re a warrior we can sleep together again.” But she felt to shocked and grief stricken to complain any longer. “Fine” she meowed sadly and walked to the apprentices’ den, tail drooping. Oakpaw had been watching silently. But now he understood. Cedarpaw loved Stonepelt! Why hadn’t he seen it before? They were always hunting together, playing together, and now poor Cedarpaw had lost all of that until she became a warrior.
Oakpaw awoke immediately. The sun was just rising. There was a rush of gold as the sunlight spread throughout the camp. Suddenly he heard a cat yowling in pain. It was coming from the nursery. Oakpaw rushed to the bramble thicket that surrounded it. He went inside and saw Ashtail giving birth to her kits. “Ashtail!” He exclaimed. There was already a gray kit and a black kit was just coming out. She yowled again. The black kit slithered out. Then a gray, black, and white one came. How many are there? He asked himself. He immediately started licking the gray one to warm it up. Suddenly Spiderheart rushed in. “What’s going on?” He yowled. “Ashtail is having her kits!” He yowled. Spiderheart rushed over and started to lick the black one. Then another one came. This one was gray and black. Then another black and white one! Finally she had another black one. That left Ashtail gasping for breath. “Six kits!” Oakpaw exclaimed. Spiderheart rushed over to Ashtail. “It’s ok. We have six beautiful kits.” He murmured to her. “Six?” She asked. “I thought there were five.” She said. “Well then you thought wrong” Said Spiderheart. “I’ll go tell Goldenstar.” Said Oakpaw. “Ok. We’ll stay here and watch the kits.” Spiderheart meowed. Oakpaw rushed to her den. She was already washing herself. “Goldenstar!” He yowled. “What is it Oakpaw? She asked.” Ashtail has just had her kits!” He meowed cheerfully. “Are you serious?” She asked. “Yes!” He meowed. “Well then let’s go see them.” She meowed. “Ok!” He said.
When they got back to the nursery, Ashtail had already named them. “The gray one is Rabbitkit, the black one is Ivykit, the gray and black one is Windkit, the black and white one is Fernkit, the gray, black, and white one is Rosekit and the other black one is Nightkit.” “Ashtail, those kits deserve such beautiful names for such beautiful kits.” Goldenstar meowed soothingly. “Thank you.” Meowed Ashtail. “They surely will make good warriors when their older. Said Goldenstar. The kits were already mewling and burrowing in Ashtail’s stomach to get milk. “Applekit, Pondkit, and Pinekit are going to be boasting about how they aren’t the youngest any more.” Oakpaw said cheerfully. “Yes. That will be very true soon. They will soon be apprentices.” Said Goldenstar. “When?” Oakpaw asked. “On the next half moon.” Oakpaw felt a tingle of excitement. The next half moon was tonight!
Moonshine and Brightpaw were just about to leave on their journey to Highstones. Oakpaw could barely hide his excitement. There were about to be three new apprentices! “Goodbye!” He hollered after them as they ducked through the tunnel in the thorn barrier. Suddenly the call rang out around the hollow. “Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather here for a clan meeting!” The cats started to gather around. He saw his father Coalfoot murmur something to Goldenstar. Applekit, Pondkit, and Pinekit were already on the cleft with Goldenstar. “Russetleg, you will mentor Pinepaw. You have shown much loyalty and kindness. I hope you pass this on to Pinepaw. Mousetail, you will mentor Pondpaw. Pass what you have learnt onto Pondpaw. And you Dapplefoot, will mentor Applepaw. You are an intelligent and brave warrior. Train Applepaw with the same skills.” All the new mentors bent and touched nose with their new apprentices. They walked down from Highrock and Oakpaw ,Cedarpaw, Brightpaw, and Blackpaw went and congratulate the new apprentices.
Oakpaw had already figured that Blackpaw had loved Brightpaw. But Blackpaw could love her all he wanted, even though he wouldn’t be able to mate with her. Almost every clan cat knew that medicine cats couldn’t mate or have kits. Perhaps Blackpaw could mate with Pinepaw or Applepaw. Oakpaw felt sleep crash over him like a wave. He dreamed he was in a dark forest. He could smell the scents of Thunderclan and Shadowclan, plus two other unfamiliar scents. Those must be Riverclan and Windclan. He thought. All of the scents were unfamiliar. He heard a cat approaching. He ducked into a clump of ferns. “We must some how get rid of those cats.” Growled a voice. Suddenly Oakpaw gasped in horror. That was Darkheart! The description matched perfectly. All from Silverface’s tales. He had been a traitor in Riverclan, then gone over to Shadowclan. They had made him deputy, until they had discovered his disloyalty and ambition. They had sent him into exile and he had then wandered onto Thunderclan. He had then killed the deputy, Yellowstream. He had hoped to become deputy then, but their leader, Treestar, had found out and killed him. He had made the new deputy Goldenclaw. Then some of Darkheart’s allies had attacked Thunderclan, and then Treestar had died. This had happened only three seasons ago. Then Goldenclaw had become leader of the clan, witch was now his leader,Goldenstar. Then another cat spoke. “But how are we going to do that? We are all dead now.” This time he recognized the cat himself. It was the she-cat Mudwhisker. Mudwhisker had been one of Darkheart’s allies. She had died when he was a kit. Sadly, their other littermate Autumnkit, had been killed. Then he suddenly recognized the other cats. They were all Darkheart’s allies. They were Blackfur, Sootpelt, Redleaf, Berrytail, Beatlefoot, Spiderear, Smalltooth, Jaggedfang, and Brownstripe. “We will use our last living warrior.” Said Darkheart. “Oh, not my kit!” Exclaimed Mudwhisker. “Yes, your kit. When Minnowpaw becomes a warrior, we will walk in her dreams and teach her what to do.” Said Darkheart. “Oh no! She’ll be killed!” Yowled Mudwhisker. “If she’s killed, she will join us.” He meowed. “But we are not in Starclan! She will go to Starclan!” She yowled. “Do you still really believe that mousebrained story? Starclan! Why would you believe that? He spat. “Stop arguing!” Yowled Brownstripe. “I’m leaving.” She meowed. Suddenly Oakpaw’s blood turned to ice. Brownstripe was walking strait towards him! Suddenly a shadow fell over him. He stood looking at a tabby she-cat that was towering over him. He flattened himself to the ground as much as possible. But she actually stepped on him. “What was that?” She hissed. She looked down at him. “Who are you?” She demanded. “I’m Oakpaw.” He stammered, terrified. “And what are you doing here, Oakpaw? You have a Thunderclan scent.” “I’m a Thunderclan apprentice.” He meowed, suddenly feeling like a kit. “Please don’t hurt me. I’m only an apprentice.” He meowed, as frightened as an abandoned kit. “I won’t hurt you. But Darkheart and the others might.” She said as she grabbed the scruff of his neck and dragged him to the open space where the arguing cats stood. “But I won’t let Minnowpaw suffer the death we suffered!” Mudwhisker yowled desperately. “I promise she won’t die!” Hissed an annoyed Spiderear. “Look what I found, Darkheart.” Meowed Brownstripe. “Well, what do we have here?” Asked Darkheart. All the cats turned to stare at them. Oakpaw was terrified. “This is Oakpaw. He’s an apprentice in Thunderclan.” She meowed. “So Oakpaw. why are you here?” He demanded. “I don’t know.” He stammered. “What do you men you don’t know?!” Yowled Darkheart. “I’m dreaming!” Oakpaw yowled. “I can’t take this any more.” Growled Darkheart. He lowered his mouth to bite into Oakpaw’s neck. He heard Brownstripe yowl”No!” And then he heard something else meowing. “Stop fidgeting for Starclan’s sake!” Mumbled a very sleepy Cedarpaw lying next to him. Dawn was just breaking, and the sun warmed his fur. He decided to hunt. He got up and raced through the thorn tunnel that led out of camp.

Suddenly Oakpaw heard rapid paw steps behind him. He whipped around and saw Daisyheart rushing to him. “And who said you could leave camp?” Asked Daisyheart angrily. “I didn’t know you would get angry. And look on the bright side. I caught some fresh-kill.” Oakpaw meowed. He actually did do some successful hunting. He had caught a vole, two rabbits, a squirrel, and a chipmunk. “Well let’s head back to camp. We can try to go on a patrol later.” Meowed Daisyheart in a more calm voice. “Ok” He meowed as he picked up the fresh-kill. He wasn’t exactly satisfied by the way his hunt had gone, but at least he had caught something.
When they had gotten back to camp, Goldenstar rushed up to him. “Your mother has decided that since now you are apprentices, she wants to go back to her warrior duties. She said that you were old enough now.” Meowed Goldenstar. “Ok.” He meowed. He was glad his mother was going back to being a warrior now. That gave him the possibility that he might go on patrols with her. Plus, it would make her happy. “She said that she hopes that she gets to see you in your warrior ceremony.” Continued Goldenstar. “What do you mean by she hopes?” He meowed. “Would you really like to know?” Whispered Goldenstar. “Yes.” He meowed back. “Then come to my den.” She said.
When they had gotten to her den and gotten comfortable, Goldenstar began to speak. “A few four seasons before you were born, your mother had the case of greencough. Moonshine is a new medicine cat. She was Moonpaw, and her mentor was Blueleaf. Your mother survived, but Blueleaf said that it would come back next leaf-bare. That is why she hopes you, Cedarpaw, and Brightpaw become warriors before leaf-bare.” She ended. “I hope so too.” He rasped. He couldn’t believe that his mother had once had greencough.
The next morning, right before the dawn patrol had gone out, they had noticed that Ashtail’s kits were starting to get more adventurous. But at the moment, they were in a crisis. Nightkit was missing! There were cats looking through the entire territory. The patrol had heard and was searching the borders. The most urgent looking cats were Spiderheart, and Ashtail herself. “Nightkit!” She was yowling desperately. Suddenly a bundle of fur, leaves, and dirt rushed through the thorn tunnel. Then Oakpaw saw it more clearly. It was Redfoot rushing in with Nightkit in his jaws. “Oh, thank you so much!” Exclaimed Ashtail to Redfoot. “Your welcome.” He meowed back. “Oh I don’t know how to repay you!” She exclaimed, while licking Nightkit viciously. Nightkit ducked away from his mother, mewling rapidly. “You should get him back to the nursery.” Meowed Goldenstar. “Your kits are the youngest too. He’s lucky it’s Greenleaf and that Redfoot found him. He could have died.” She meowed. She suddenly started speaking again. “I once had kits. One of them died because he fell in the river, another one got turned into a kittypet. The one that survived was that one.” She nodded towards Daisyheart. “My only kit left. Daisykit. She is now a warrior, and I am glad of that. Eaglekit is now in the ranks of Starclan, and Skykit is living the life of a pampered kittypet.” She meowed. “I grieve for both of them, and wish they could be here now.” She meowed sadly. Daisyheart looked sadly down at her paws.
Oakpaw stared at his leader in aw. She had been so brave. But, she had had a dramatic life. Her kits died, her leader died, and she became leader with only one kit. Now her one kit was a warrior, mentoring him. He saw Daisyheart walk into Goldenstar’s den, their tails entwining. Oakpaw suddenly felt hunger clawing at his belly. He walked over to the fresh-kill pile and picked a plump mouse. As he walked back to the apprentices den, he saw the moon floating in the sky.
“Oakpaw!” H e awoke to hear Cedarpaw calling him from outside. “What?” He meowed back. “Come here!” She meowed excitedly. Oakpaw hauled himself up from his sleeping place and padded out into the clearing. He looked around. Sunlight was streaming into the camp. Cedarpaw was standing outside the nursery with Smokefoot. Smokefoot looked surprisingly plump. “Smokefoot is going to have more kits!” Exclaimed Cedarpaw. “Really?!” He asked. “Yes! Tell him Smokefoot!” Meowed Cedarpaw. “Yes, Oakpaw. I am having another litter with in the next moon.” Meowed Smokefoot calmly. “Can we help name them?” He asked. He was so exited. Smokefoot was having more kits! “Of course. You can each name one kit.” She meowed. “Yay! I’m gong to name my kit Cloverkit!” meowed Cedarpaw. “You don’t have to name them yet!” Laughed Smokefoot, as they walked into the nursery to pay Ashtail’s kits a visit.

When they were in the nursery with Ashtail’s kits, the kits were already getting very adventurous. Ivykit was pouncing on every leaf that floated into the nursery, Windkit and Nightkit, the only toms in the litter, were play fighting, and Fernkit, Rosekit, and Rabbitkit were playing catch with a mouse they had brought in for them. “Oh, they’re so cute!” Meowed Cedarpaw. “Take this! Grrr!” Squealed Nightkit as he jumped at Windkit and barreled him over. “Be gentle, Nightkit.” Ashtail meowed soothingly. “Don’t worry! Nightkit will never beat me at fighting.” Meowed Windkit proudly. “I bet I’m the best hunter!” Squealed Ivykit. “I’m sure you are!” Laughed Ashtail. “Would you like some fresh-kill Ashtail?” asked Smokefoot. “Yes, thank you Smokefoot.” Suddenly he heard a call. “Oakpaw! Where are you?” It was Daisyheart. “I have to go. Coming!” He meowed.
“What do you want?” He hissed at her. “I need you for something. Follow me. I need you for something.” She silently whispered back. “Where are we going?” He asked eagerly, as they ducked into the thorn tunnel that led out of camp. “Just follow me” She hissed. They raced swiftly through the forest, and then suddenly Daisyheart stopped. “Be quiet.” She growled to him. They peered through a bush and looked out. Oakpaw stared in astonishment. Darktail and Tallfoot were standing there, talking, in the middle of Thunderclan territory! “What are they doing?” He whispered to Daisyheart. “I think we should report this to Goldenstar.” She replied. They started running, terrified that Shadowclan would already be in camp.
Oakpaw and Daisyheart rushed into the thorn tunnel, and then scurried into Goldenstar’s den. “Goldenstar!” Daisyheart panted. ”There are two Shadowclan warriors on our territory! They were Darktail and Tallfoot.” “What?!” Goldenstar hissed, her blue eyes blazing with cold fury. ”They better not be!” She spat. She hurled out of her den, and then jumped onto Highrock. “Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey join underneath Highrock for a clan meeting!” All the cats gathered, and Ashtail, Smokefoot, and Spiderheart peered out of the nursery. “Oakpaw and Daisyheart say they found Darktail and Tallfoot in our territory, having a little chat.” Her eyes still blazed with anger, and her fur was bristling as she spat out each word. “So, we should be alert in case they try to attack-“ She was cut short by a furious shriek as Russetleg paced around a Shadowclan warrior. At first Oakpaw didn’t recognize it, and then he realized it was Jayheart. Jayheart was spitting in fury as he circled Russetleg, and suddenly more ShadowClan warriors burst through the thorn tunnel. Cats let out startled yowls as some threw themselves into battle. Spiderheart was locked into combat with Lionfur, obviously trying to guard the nursery. Dapplefoot had pinned down Hawkpelt, while Mousetail writhed on the ground with Rushpelt. He was just in time to see Weaselpaw swipe a paw and make a striking blow to Cedarpaw’s head, and her stumble over and lay still. “No!” He yowled. He rushed over to his sister and nudged her. “Please don’t die, Cedarpaw. Please. What will I be without you?” he whispered in her ear. He felt hope burn in his belly as he saw the faint rise and fall of her chest. Her tail flicked, and she let out a moan of agony. He suddenly felt paws trip him and in a heartbeat he was face to face with Mothpaw, but she had him pinned down. She swiped his head with outstretched claws, and he felt stinging pain as blood spattered out of his head. He writhed under her and slashed at her nose with his paw. Blood spattered out of the wound he had conflicted and she let out a screech of fury. She let him go and she leaped into thicker battle. He stood up and looked around. He saw both of his sisters; Brightpaw was examining Cedarpaw as blood poured out from a gash in her side and drying blood on her muzzle. He leaped into the thick of battle, hardly knowing which cats were his enemies. He yowled in pain as claws scored down his flank. He suddenly had Silkypelt pinned down; but as he reached down to bite her throat, he felt teeth grab his scruff and toss him off her. He flew in the air until he hit the ground with a sickening thud. Everything was dark, and he couldn’t see anything. All he could hear were faint screeches and yowls of the battle, but they were fading.
“Wake up! Oakpaw, wake up!” Oakpaw awoke in the medicine cat’s den with Brightpaw staring down at him. “Finally! You were knocked out for almost the entire battle.” She meowed to him. He ached all over, and he had some type of pungent scent in his mouth. ”I gave you some poppy seeds, and then I put a poultice of marigold on your scratches. In a while I’m going to give you juniper.” “What? I don’t have bellyache.” He replied. “I know mouse-brain! It’s to give you more strength.” She meowed. Most of all, his leg stung badly. He tried to stand up, and it hung at an awkward angle. His leg forced him to collapse again as he hissed through gritted teeth. “Well, obviously you’re not supposed to get up!” Brightpaw retorted. “Your leg is broken, mouse-brain. You fell on it and put all your wait on it.” “What?!” he yowled. “Well, it happened when Tallfoot threw you off Silkypelt!” she hissed playfully. Then Goldenstar’s call rang out. “Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather under Highrock for a clan meeting!” she yowled. “Well, I want you to stay here.“ she meowed to him. “Okay.” He replied. He actually felt slightly disappointed that he couldn’t go out for the clan meeting. But, he still could hear her. “I know we were all surprised when Shadowclan attacked us. Many of us were injured, but thank starclan that we survived. Brightpaw and Moonshine will be very busy. We must respect them and obey when they treat our injuries.” She finished. Oakpaw had just noticed that Cedarpaw was next to him, cobwebs plastered on the side of her head. He looked around and saw Dapplefoot with cobwebs on her ear, Rockpool with dried blood on his flank, where pawfulls of fur had been torn out, with an awful scent coming from him. He was sleeping, with Redfoot next to him. He saw Blackpaw lying in a bed of moss, with a long scratch down his shoulder. He tried to sit up and groom his ruffled fur. Cedarpaw stirred next to him, and her eyes blinked open. “Oakpaw, what’s going on? I just remember Shadowclan coming in, and then Weaselpaw hit me…” she broke off. “It’s okay. Goldenstar called a meeting earlier.” He replied. “Did you go?” she asked him. “No” he replied. “Why not?” she asked him. “I broke my leg.” He confessed. “What? How?” she asked him, startled to hear her brother’s injuries. “I was going to bite Silkypelt, and then Tallfoot threw me off and I fell on it and got knocked out.” He replied shakily. “Wow.” Replied Cedarpaw. “I know.” He replied to her grimly. “Well, our sister said that my leg was dislocated and I now have a scar on my face.” She meowed, in a tone that said she was unhappy. She meant their sister as in Moonshine, the ThunderClan medicine cat’s apprentice, Brightpaw. Then Brightpaw reappeared. “How are you guys doing?” she asked. “Fine.” He meowed.

“Look, I really feel sorry for you guys. I wish you hadn’t gotten hurt.” She whispered to them. “You’re both my littermates, and I love you both.” Her gaze flicked somberly then back. “There should be Autumnpaw.” She whispered.” I know.” Replied Oakpaw. He felt sadness crash over him. Their littermate Autumnkit had been killed by one of darkheart’s allies. They had been tiny kits then, but all of them still remembered Autumnkit. He gazed up at her, his eyes filled with sorrow. “Well, how about that juniper I promised?” asked Brightpaw, changing the subject. “okay.” He meowed as she backed into moonshine’s den. She returned with a bundle of the purple berries in a leaf. “Here.” She said, nudging a few towards him. He bent down and chewed them, the horrible taste in his mouth. “Can I get a drink?” he asked. “Sure. Be careful though.” Oakpaw got up on his three legs and limped out of camp. Cedarpaw had been thirsty too, so she had come with him. They reached the river soon, and they bent on damp earth to drink. Suddenly Oakpaw felt some of the dirt underneath him give way as he plunged into the river. Water filled his mouth as he tried to yowl for help. He thrashed wildly with three legs, his broken one swaying in the current. He heard Cedarpaw yowl for him, and then distant splashing. He caught a glimpse of ginger and white fur among the waves. Great Starclan, he thought, what does she think she’s doing? He asked himself. He felt her small but sharp teeth meet his scruff as she tried to haul him out of the water. Then he felt her fall back as she was swept away. And then, just at that moment, he saw one of the patrols coming out of the bushes. He felt a giant pang of relief when he felt himself being pulled out of the icy torrent.
When they had gotten all the water he had breathed out of his lungs, he recognized Cedarpaw’s ginger and white pelt lying next to him, and his mentor, Daisyheart, standing over him. “Oakpaw, are you okay?” she asked. “I’m fine.” He rasped in reply. His leg ached even more, and he felt light-headed and dizzy. He looked around to see the rest of the patrol. Daisyheart standing over him, and Redfoot standing over Cedarpaw. Russetleg and Sandtail were checking that everyone was okay, and Dapplefoot was just helping Spiderheart out of the river. He choked out a mouthful of water, and Daisyheart comforted him. He was lying in a bed of moss, with Cedarpaw next to him. The small nest also had soft grass and heather, which gave off a sweet scent. They started getting up, as they were herded back to camp.
“I thought I told you to be careful! It’s a good thing that patrol came in time. You were nearly crow-food!” Brightpaw meowed as she sorted through herbs. They were back inside the medicine cat den, and Brightpaw was seeing which herbs could still be used. “Sorry. We were drinking and then the ground underneath me gave way. Then Cedarpaw tried to rescue me, but then she started drowning too.” He replied to her. ”ok, I guess that could be an excuse.” She rolled her eyes playfully, and then turned to get some comfrey for his leg.
Oakpaw was pretty much better, but he couldn’t train because of his leg. He was allowed to go on patrols, though. And Daisyheart was allowed to give him hunting sessions. One day he was hunting with her. “Now, Oakpaw, what do you smell?” she asked him. He sniffed the air to take in the scents around him. “Well, I smell Thunderclan, obviously. I smell prey and... Daisyheart, I don’t get it. There’s the scent of cat, but it smells like twoleg too.” He gave her a confused look, and her gaze became a little alarmed. “That’s kittypet scent. But for some reason to me, it smells hauntingly familiar.” She looked around. He cast nervous glances around, and then he saw a plump, grey cat hiding in a clump of ferns. “Daisyheart!” he hissed at her. He pointed at the cat with his tail. Daisyheart looked at where he was pointing and a look of clear astonishment spread over Daisyheart’s face. “Skykit?” Daisyheart cautiously asked. “Wh-wh-who a-a- are –y-you?!” the cat asked strangely. “It’s me, Daisykit, remember?” Daisyheart asked. The strange cat gasped. “Daisykit? Is that really you? And who’s that?” she asked, pointing to Oakpaw. “This is Oakpaw. My apprentice.” Replied Daisyheart. “And, I’m a warrior, not a kit. So don’t call me Daisykit, call me Daisyheart.” “You’re a warrior already? Wow! I must be pretty old for a kit, then!” exclaimed skykit. “Daisyheart, who’s that?” Oakpaw whispered. “That’s my sister! Remember when Goldenstar said skykit got captured by twolegs? This is her!” “Skykit, we have to get you back to camp. Goldenstar would love to see you.” Daisyheart meowed. “Goldenstar? I thought Treestar was the leader. Did he die, and...Mother became the leader! Great starclan!” Skykit yowled. “Let’s go.”
Oakpaw, Daisyheart, and Skykit burst through the thorn tunnel. Most cats stared at them curiously, but they rushed to goldenstar’s den. They heard a few suspicious whispers, and then went inside.
“Goldenstar!” Daisyheart meowed excitedly. “Skykit’s back!” “Skykit?!” Goldenstar yowled. “Skykit!” Goldenstar gasped. “Great starclan!” Goldenstar yowled. She started covering Skykit in furious licks, and Skykit ducked away with a muffled squeak. “Oh my, we have to do something about that.” She said, staring at skykit’s collar. Goldenstar bent forward and gripped the collar in her mouth. She tried to loosen it, and Skykit let out a squeak of pain as the hard, pointy thing dug into her neck. Goldenstar gripped the small strap that winded around the pointy thing, and pulled it up. The pointy thing came out of the strap. Then Goldenstar tried to take it off again, and it seemed Goldenstar tugged too hard, because when she did, it sent her tumbling into the wall of the den with the collar in her mouth. Goldenstar got up and shook dust from her pelt. Then she set down the collar. “I have no idea what so ever how twolegs can get those things on and off.” Goldenstar muttered. “Well, Skykit, we must get you into training again.” She meowed. She padded out of her den, and then yowled; “let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather here for a clan meeting!” the cats started gathering, and Oakpaw, Daisyheart, and Skykit came out of Goldenstar’s den. “But that’s a kittypet!” exclaimed Blackpaw. “Hush!” hissed his mentor, Sandtail. “This kit of mine was captured by twolegs many seasons ago. She has returned to the wild, and must begin training again. Stonepelt,” she began. Stonepelt looked astonished, as he hadn’t known about his mentoring. “You are a fairly new warrior. It must be an honor for you to take on your first apprentice. Thorntail taught you well, and I want you to pass on those skills to Skykit. Skykit, until you have received your warrior name, you will be known as Skypaw. We honor you as a member of the clan once more.” “Skypaw! Skypaw! Skypaw!” the clan cheered. Skypaw looked as if she would burst with pride, as she padded down to the other apprentices. Oakpaw followed, as he should get back to his den.
Oakpaw dreamed he was in the forest. He was in a mass of bushes and trees he was stalking a mouse, then a branch poked him painfully in the side. He moved away from it, but it poked him again. He tried to continue hunting, but the branch kept poking him. He heard a faint meowing, and then he blinked open his eyes and saw Cedarpaw poking him with her paw. “Stop it! What is it?” he asked grumpily. “We’re going to be warriors today!” Cedarpaw exclaimed, her voice trembling with excitement. Her eyes shone, and she was needing the ground with her paws impatiently. “Really?!” he was sitting up in his nest the moment she said that. “Really!” she meowed. He started grooming himself for the following day.
Chapter Four
Skypaw’s nest was on one side of him, her nest was still warm, but she was gone. She must have gone out early for training. He thought. Cedarpaw had gone out hunting with Rockpool, and Blackpaw was battle training with Sandtail. He was in the den, with Applepaw and Pinepaw sleeping next to each other. He guessed Pondpaw had gone out on the dawn patrol with Mousetail.
Oakpaw padded into the clearing with Cedarpaw up to Highrock. It was nearly sunset, and time for their warrior ceremony. Goldenstar came out of the den and called the meeting. “Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey father here for a clan meeting!” she yowled. They hurried up to her den, so they would be there on time. “I, Goldenstar, leader of ThunderClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on these apprentices. They have trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend them to you as warriors in turn. Cedarpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code, and protect and defend your clan, even at the cost of your life?” Cedarpaw’s eyes shone with excitement. “I do.” She meowed. “Then by the powers of starclan I give you your warrior name. From this moment on, you will be known as Cedarclaw. You have shown much determination and loyalty, and we welcome you as a full warrior of ThunderClan.” “Cedarclaw! Cedarclaw!” the clan cheered. Cedarclaw walked down towards the other warriors. “Oakpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code, and protect and defend the clan, even at the cost of your life?” he swallowed. “I do.” He meowed confidently. “Then by the powers of starclan I give you your warrior name. From this moment on, you will be known as Oakfoot. You have shown much courage and strength, and we welcome you as a full warrior of ThunderClan.” “Oakfoot! Oakfoot!” the clan cheered. He walked proudly down towards the other warriors, and they congratulated Cedarclaw and Oakfoot. Oakfoot had spent many moons training, and a lot had happened in those moons. And the reward had been great. He had become a full-fledged warrior, so his training was worth it.
